Cathie Wood Career:
Wood got hired as an assistant economist at Capital Group in 1977, because of her mentor Arthur Laffer. She remained there for three years. She relocated to New York City in 1980 to work as the chief economist, analyst, portfolio manager, and managing director at Jennison Associates. She has been there for 18 years. She challenged Henry Kaufman in the early 1980s on why she thought interest rates had peaked.
Wood co-founded Tupelo Capital Management, a New York City-based hedge fund, with Lulu C. Wang in 1998. Wood left AllianceBernstein in 2014 as her idea for actively managed exchange-traded funds based on disruptive innovation was deemed too risky by the firm. She then started Ark Invest. The company is named after the Ark of the Covenant, which Wood was reading at the time. Bill Hwang of Archegos Capital contributed capital to ARK’s first four ETFs.
Bloomberg News editor-in-chief emeritus Matthew A. Winkler named Wood the top stock picker of 2020. Wood managed two funds that were among the top ten largest female-run funds by total net assets as of March 2021.

Cathie Wood’s ARK’S ETFs scored fifth on Morningstar’s list of the top 10 wealth-destroying funds prepared by portfolio strategist Amy C. Arnott as of 31 December 2021, slightly below investment vehicles from Credit Suisse, ALPS, Kraneshares, and Barclay. Wood’s flagship fund, Ark Innovation, had fallen behind the S&P 500 for five years as of December 2022, losing more than 80% of its value from last year’s peak.
